Birth Photographer | Makeshift Doula

In Family Portrait, Newborn, Photography, story, Uncategorized on September 7, 2016 at 5:14 PM

A few weeks back I had the honor of being asked to photograph a birth –  AND  – as my other career hat is as a massage therapist – be the stand in doula. What an experience!  I met the couple at the hospital and photographed the experience from hours after the water broke ’til 30 hours later when a c-section had to be performed – alternating between taking a few pictures and then doing a back rub with some essential oil infused lotions I’d brought along.  This photo-journalistic / documentary style is a departure from the usual head shots and portraits I do and I really enjoyed witnessing and capturing the untouched, non-staged, real life moments.

The hospital staff were kind and accommodating and even allowed me in the operating room to capture a few images of babies first breath [as mom had hoped for] when we found out the c-section was necessary.

I’ve got a few goofy photos of me and dad in scrubs, along with some beautiful shots of the raw reality of bringing life into this world. [What our bodies can do is amazing!!]

But for today’s sharing just a few cute shots of this beautiful blessing.

Congratulations to the new mom and dad and thank you for trusting me to be part of the experience with you!

Twin Boys

That moment when you are photographing twin boys and you ask them to pretend to like each other.  Young boxer in training. ;) Love how this joking moment shows their affection for one another.

Last week in the studio we did a test run for holiday mini sessions. I know – it’s ridiculously early. If it weren’t for a local mom who urged me to get ready – Christmas would not be on my mind yet. I’m glad she did because your photos need to be taken with enough lead time to allow for editing and then ordering prints for you. Call today to book your appointment. :)

A Day In The Life | Family Portrait Session | CT

In Children, Family Portrait, Photography, Portrait on August 20, 2014 at 6:29 PM

A day in the life portrait sessions are something new I’ve been experimenting with lately. Rather than dressing up, coming to my studio and trying to get everyone to behave perfectly to make one beautiful photo – I come to you and document your life as is. I’m your paparazzi for a few hours and we capture all those precious moments that make life wonderful …. mess, imperfection and all.

This morning bath is just one activity we photographed in the three hours I spent with this family. I love the bottom right image because it contains three generations of love. Grammie in the background helping Josh get clean … while he leans over and looks at a photo of his great-grandfather.

And one of Joshua’s twin brother Jacob – taking a break from watching Mickey and eating breakfast to give me some serious checking out. I was told Jacob is more introverted and loves really taking people in – so this moment captures him wonderfully. :)

How sweet is she? Mom brought L in to recreate a vintage photo of her Memere. I love doing this type of portrait work! Such a blessing to help a family make new memories and gifts.

Toys for Tots | Manchester, CT

Even though Sock Monkey is sitting on top of a full box of new, unwrapped toys – I’ll still be collecting them in the studio for the next week.

You can send a text to see if the studio is open [ 860.306.0067 ] or just pop by. If we are in an appointment, just leave your toy on the front porch and we will bring it in.

Thanks for helping to make this a Happy Christmas for others.

The studio is officially a Toys for Tots collection site this year. I’ll be collecting new, unwrapped toys through December 13th – so please pop by and bring one. I can’t tell you how excited I was when the first ones got dropped off. Giving to others just plain feels good and my hope for the studio is to be able to continually contribute to the community around me. I can’t do it without you joining hands with me. To that end – I’m offering free hand massages to the first five people who bring toys by. What is one of the ways you plant seeds of love to those around you?

Family Portrait in Wickham Park – Manchester, CT

In Children, local artist, Photography, Portrait on October 2, 2013 at 3:53 PM

I realize that each time I share a few photos from my portrait sessions I use similar descriptives.  “I had so much fun; it was an honor; this family is beautiful; can’t wait to share a sneak peek…” Thankfully – it’s always true. I love what I do and the people I get to meet in the process. The Qureshi family was no different. They showed up to our chosen location of Wickham Park right on time and dressed wonderfully. In fact, in the back of my mind I was wishing I could hire Marcy to help all my clients get ready for their sessions. [Take note future clients – all of their colors compliment each other without being too “matchy” – and they convey the vibrancy of this family] Marcy is due with baby number two in a few weeks – so we got this session in just in time and I’m very happy to share it with you. ♥ [Please note – you can click on each image to view it larger/in a slide show format]

Carter and the two second portraits … photography at Studio on Main

In Business, Children, Photography, Portrait on May 7, 2013 at 6:21 AM

I see posts online all the time about the “10 minute portrait” – how to get a decent shot when you are short on time.

Five year old Carter and his mom popped into the studio recently to deliver me a piece of furniture – and Carter insisted on being my model.

We invented the “two second portrait” … lol.  First he ran full speed through the studio – in and out of the massage room, kitchen, gallery space – then back to the photography space. He’d hop up on a chair, stool, couch – and shout “take my picture now” – at which point he’d smile and sit still for literally two seconds before wiggling down and running the course again.

It was actually a lot of fun to photograph someone so excited to be my subject and gave me a great opportunity to explore the light and space.  I’ve been so busy just setting up and promoting the massage therapy portion of the business that I’ve neglected to remind anyone that I am a photographer too.

The possibilities here are endless. There is a beautiful indoor space, a huge front porch and even a small yard. Room for both styled and natural shoots, I can’t wait to get started.
