Changing Sleep Patterns

Fall is here. With that comes shifting schedules and potentially interrupted sleep patterns. Kids have to change their nightly routines in order to get up for school on time and our natural rhythms get messed with as daylight grows shorter and the time clocks change.

An easy self-care tool to support your sleep during all this change is to use high quality, pure essential oils.

A popular oil for relaxation is Lavender. [ Don’t get Lavender, Spike – as that is stimulating]

Here are a few ways to incorporate lavender into a nightly, calming routine:

1. Use an aromatherapy diffuser. Add approximately 3-5 drops of pure essential oil per 100 ml of water. You can start the diffuser 30 minutes before bed time to get the scent in the room, and then let it run all night.

2. Make your own linen spray. Add about 20 drops of lavender essential oil to one ounce of distilled water in a spray bottle. Shake well – and spray before bed. Add or remove the amount of essential oil based on your ‘scent preference’.

3. Give yourself a light massage by incorporating the lavender essential oil into a carrier oil such as jojoba or sweet almond oil. Add 15 drops of essential oil per ounce of carrier oil for a 2.5% dilution and massage into your feet, temples and pulse points.

My personal favorite is the diffuser method. It not only lulls me into a deeper state of relaxation … it also makes the whole room smell great.

The Double Unwind

I have news to share. Many of you know that back in February I had to leave the original location of the studio unexpectedly. For the past six months or so I’ve been improvising in make shift spaces, and for a short time have been sharing a room with a new yoga instructor.

The news: we are relocating and expanding our current space.

I’ll be back on Main St in Manchester – just a few doors in the opposite direction of my original spot. A local man has purchased the old armory in town and has plans to rehab it and lease spaces to local businesses. When I walk through the building I have visions of it being an artist / wellness spot in town – there’s so much potential!!

To welcome you to the new location I’ve teamed up with the yoga instructor, Ellen Mangiafico, to create a special for the month of November. Grab a friend and come in for an hour of unwinding for only $50 each!! You’ll get a half hour massage and a half hour one-on-one yoga session at an enormously reduced rate.

14 things I’ve learned since leaving massage school : #1

Yesterday marked 14 years since my first day of massage school out in Port Townsend, WA.

I spent a little time reflecting on what I’ve learned from having my hands on countless bodies of all different shapes, sizes, and levels of health over the years.  In random order here are some of my observations and things I wish my clients knew.

#1 Massage is a collaboration.

As experienced of a body worker as I am – I can’t force you to relax.

We have to work in partnership with one another.

It is my job to create a safe, calming space. I approach our time together with as much presence and reverence as I can and treat you with kindness, gentleness and respect when you are on my table. I use any of the modalities I’ve learned over the years to help improve your range of motion, reduce your stress and calm the nervous system.

YOU have a job too.

Show up 5 minutes before your appointment time to give yourself a chance to transition from your fast paced life into a more meditative head space. Communicate your needs both before and during the session. BREATHE. Taking a deep breath when we approach an area of tension helps the body let go.  Let yourself be taken care of. People who try to “help” me in the massage by lifting their legs, arms or heads are actually working against the process by engaging and tensing the very muscles we are working to soften.

I had a regular client who after a few months of coming for massage remarked that she was never able to fully turn her mind off or get into that blissful, peaceful massage space we all crave. After a bit of exploring I discovered that she had been so tired in the afternoons that she was having a quad espresso before she came for her appointments!

She was speeding herself up to come here and relax. No wonder she could never quite go there. :)

Ellen Mangiafico will be leading an hour long beginner level class at an introductory rate on Saturday mornings. She is completing her teacher training in Embody Yoga and is a warm and generous soul who is eager to share what she’s learned with you.

Massage can help with Addiction & Anxiety

I’ve read two articles recently about the benefits that massage can have for people suffering with anxiety and / or addiction. One of the biggest things I’ve witnessed on my table repeatedly is just how quickly safe, therapeutic touch can help a person to be more fully grounded in their body. We spend so much time in our heads every day – worrying about the hundreds of things we need to accomplish, wondering if we are doing OK as a parent; friend; business owner…hoping that soon life will get easier. All of that thinking and worrying increases our stress levels and specifically raises the levels of cortisol in our bodies.  That can put us into a cycle of feeling run down, often leaving us with decreased immune system functioning, tiredness and lack of patience, etc  A one hour Swedish massage can aid in breaking that stress cycle.

I’ve had clients come in for massage practically bouncing off the walls from the busyness of their lives – their levels of anxiety are high. Many of them, somewhere in our session time, will heave a huge sigh of relief and settle in – shifting from existing just mentally to really sinking down “into themselves/their bodies”. It’s not uncommon for people to shed tears as a way to release tension. They really get in touch with the effects life is having on them and are able to experience a sense of peace and well-being, often for the first time in many months. Massage has been proven to increase dopamine and serotonin and decrease cortisol  – all of which can help alleviate depression and anxiety and help support you in making healthier self-care choices.

…and I enjoy it best when served in a mason jar.

I’ve been trying to mix it up lately – and last night made an Iced Green Tea with Pomegranate. After it steeped for a bit I added strawberries and blueberries to give it a little extra flavor. Yum!! I’m hooked on this new concoction.

One of the things I’m looking forward to in the new studio is being able to serve up some refreshing, unique beverages like this.

Imagine, after your massage is through – I deliver you this thirst quenching deliciousness. You take a sip while taking a peek in my art gallery … or you grab something to read and lounge on my front porch for a minute before heading back to your busy life.

Doesn’t that sound like heaven?
