Birth Photographer | Makeshift Doula

In Family Portrait, Newborn, Photography, story, Uncategorized on September 7, 2016 at 5:14 PM

A few weeks back I had the honor of being asked to photograph a birth –  AND  – as my other career hat is as a massage therapist – be the stand in doula. What an experience!  I met the couple at the hospital and photographed the experience from hours after the water broke ’til 30 hours later when a c-section had to be performed – alternating between taking a few pictures and then doing a back rub with some essential oil infused lotions I’d brought along.  This photo-journalistic / documentary style is a departure from the usual head shots and portraits I do and I really enjoyed witnessing and capturing the untouched, non-staged, real life moments.

The hospital staff were kind and accommodating and even allowed me in the operating room to capture a few images of babies first breath [as mom had hoped for] when we found out the c-section was necessary.

I’ve got a few goofy photos of me and dad in scrubs, along with some beautiful shots of the raw reality of bringing life into this world. [What our bodies can do is amazing!!]

But for today’s sharing just a few cute shots of this beautiful blessing.

Congratulations to the new mom and dad and thank you for trusting me to be part of the experience with you!

Twin Boys

That moment when you are photographing twin boys and you ask them to pretend to like each other.  Young boxer in training. ;) Love how this joking moment shows their affection for one another.

Massage or Photography

Clients often ask me what I enjoy doing more, Massage Therapy or Photography.  The answer? They both energize me in different ways and have more in common than you’d think. In both spaces I’m working with people and quite often, their insecurities.  There’s a lot of ‘space holding’ involved. Ensuring that no matter what type of work we’re doing the person feels safe, respected and witnessed. In both professions I get to meet fun, interesting people and always have the goal of having them leave me feeling better [about them selves] then before we met.

Last week I got to do a head shot for a gentleman who is training for an Iron Man competition [wow]!

Yesterday I had just enough time between massage clients to play with some photography techniques for a photo group I recently joined. Our prompt for this week was that the image had to be “artistic and red”. I played around with studio lighting, no lighting at all, long exposure, having a fan blow on the flower petals, etc … and choose this as the image to share with the group.

Then I had a massage client who had a major shift in her body during our session. No matter what’s going on in the studio it’s always about creativity, growth and supporting people in living their best life and I’m so grateful for each connection, no matter how it’s made.

Beautiful pup got all tuckered out after his professional photo shoot.  Bo’s mom and dad use him as a therapy dog in their business and wanted him to have some new, fun head shots for the new website their building.  Pictured here is Bo taking a five. ;)

I’m struggling to find the right words for this post. And maybe for just now the image is enough. Carey came to me a few months ago and asked if I would help her document her experience with breast cancer. What an honor! It’s been such a gift to be trusted to share this space with her and humbling to know that some of the images we’ve made have been a cathartic part of her healing process.  She’s gone through chemo, had a double mastectomy and is now preparing for radiation. We’ve documented her bald head, scars, drainage tubes, the love between she and her husband … and today some of the reconstructive surgery. I know this image is intense. Cancer is intense. Finding the strength and perspective to fight with as much grace and humour as Carey has must come from a deep place inside of her and I think what we see here is the warrior. Thank you, my friend, for letting me play a small part in your journey. ♥

[ Carey has given me permission to share this image. As she walks further down her path we may share more with the intent of giving other people in her shoes hope, shared strength and encouragement ]

The Angel Oak

In Art, landscape, local artist, Photography on September 4, 2013 at 7:03 PM

One of my clients today was originally from CT and now lives in FL. We spoke for a few minutes about travel and where our favorite places have been. I’ve lived and traveled all over the country and can find something good to say about every stop along my journey. I will say the two Portland’s – OR and ME both caught my attention before I opened the studio here in CT – and I think I will live on the coast of Maine one day. Our chat got me reflecting on all the traveling I did while teaching myself photography – and specifically about the Angel Oak. It lives on Johns Island in South Carolina and is one of the largest and oldest living things on the east coast. One image that I made during my travels (see it here has been a popular seller for me. I searched through my archives and reworked another photo from that journey. The person was left in the image to give you a small idea of the size of this beautiful tree. What’s one of your favorite places?
