I did a “Portrait Project” a couple of years ago. The idea was to build my portfolio, improve my skills and plant the seeds for a project that swims around in the back of my mind. Challenging the ideas of what beauty is – finding value in every person – and reflecting what I see back. Tamyka agreed to be one of my models. We were in natural light and she started off with no make up. Something in the way the light was hitting her caught my attention and I asked her to quickly apply some make up and wrap herself in the colorful scarf she had around her neck. This was our result. While as a photographer who has learned a little since then, I can get wrapped up in all the technical things that need improvement – I still love this image. The moment we captured will never exist again and I love how photography can capture and document our lives – allowing us to travel back in time for a minute just like a song or a smell can.

“Someday, somewhere – anywhere, unfailingly, you’ll find yourself, and that, and only that, can be the happiest or bitterest hour of your life.”

In Children, local artist, Photography, Portrait on October 2, 2013 at 3:53 PMI realize that each time I share a few photos from my portrait sessions I use similar descriptives. “I had so much fun; it was an honor; this family is beautiful; can’t wait to share a sneak peek…” Thankfully – it’s always true. I love what I do and the people I get to meet in the process. The Qureshi family was no different. They showed up to our chosen location of Wickham Park right on time and dressed wonderfully. In fact, in the back of my mind I was wishing I could hire Marcy to help all my clients get ready for their sessions. [Take note future clients – all of their colors compliment each other without being too “matchy” – and they convey the vibrancy of this family] Marcy is due with baby number two in a few weeks – so we got this session in just in time and I’m very happy to share it with you. ♥ [Please note – you can click on each image to view it larger/in a slide show format]

In Art, landscape, local artist, Photography on September 4, 2013 at 7:03 PMOne of my clients today was originally from CT and now lives in FL. We spoke for a few minutes about travel and where our favorite places have been. I’ve lived and traveled all over the country and can find something good to say about every stop along my journey. I will say the two Portland’s – OR and ME both caught my attention before I opened the studio here in CT – and I think I will live on the coast of Maine one day. Our chat got me reflecting on all the traveling I did while teaching myself photography – and specifically about the Angel Oak. It lives on Johns Island in South Carolina and is one of the largest and oldest living things on the east coast. One image that I made during my travels (see it here has been a popular seller for me. I searched through my archives and reworked another photo from that journey. The person was left in the image to give you a small idea of the size of this beautiful tree. What’s one of your favorite places?

In Art, art portraiture, local artist, Photography, Portrait on August 20, 2013 at 6:09 PMIf I had my way, the money, the resources, etc most of my photography would be made using old processes. It’s not that I’ve done then so much as I admire the craft. The risk. The patience. The time invested. The skill that has to be developed. This is my first attempt at giving a nod to tin type, digitally. The first image is one I took last week, with something like this in mind. A Lensbaby Composer was used to give the natural hazy/blurry feel. I quite like it as is and enjoy the mood that’s created with all the texture layers. Which one speaks to you the most?
