Today’s Photo Experiment – Digital Wet Plate
In Art, art portraiture, local artist, Photography, Portrait on August 31, 2013 at 5:25 PMMaking something new, old … tin type [ish] photograph
In Art, art portraiture, local artist, Photography, Portrait on August 20, 2013 at 6:09 PMIf I had my way, the money, the resources, etc most of my photography would be made using old processes. It’s not that I’ve done then so much as I admire the craft. The risk. The patience. The time invested. The skill that has to be developed. This is my first attempt at giving a nod to tin type, digitally. The first image is one I took last week, with something like this in mind. A Lensbaby Composer was used to give the natural hazy/blurry feel. I quite like it as is and enjoy the mood that’s created with all the texture layers. Which one speaks to you the most?
Art Portraiture
In Art, art portraiture, local artist, Photography, Portrait on August 19, 2013 at 5:33 PMI love doing this kind of work. I’ve begged a friend recently to move closer to help me do more of this. She builds sets for plays and I’d love to create some for photographs.

More [not] Senior Portraits with Thea
In Art, art portraiture, local artist, Photography, Portrait, senior on August 18, 2013 at 3:53 PMOne comment that stood out to me from our senior portrait session together was Thea’s mom saying something like ”That’s beautiful, but it’s too … MAGAZINE”. This made us all laugh. It was both a compliment and a good reminder to me that we needed to change-up the style of the shoot a little bit. It was exciting though, to see the growth in my images. Maybe a year or so ago we would have said, “That’s cool, but it’s just too … 4th grade art project”. It was a true pleasure working with Jess and Thea. Both artists themselves, it was great to get their input on what we were doing, where we were photographing and how the light should be. Collaboration with other artists can be so energizing. Here are a handful of images we made that won’t make the yearbook but are still lovely and fun.
Senior Photo “Artsy Extras”
In Art, art portraiture, Business, local artist, Photography, Portrait, senior on August 15, 2013 at 5:27 PMThea came to have her senior photo taken this week. Her mom Jessica and I met in the 7th grade – so it was pretty crazy to be taking a photo of her daughter – older than we were when we met!! They were gracious enough to humor me with some more artsy moments in between getting the senior portrait. Jessica was “the sun”, holding my light reflector and Thea was my “part time model” – posing in ways that didn’t feel overly natural – but worked well for the feeling I wanted to create. Thea asked me if I knew how to / if I ever played around with the colors of the image in my post processing. I normally don’t if it’s for a straight up portrait – but for fun I spent a few moment with these. Art portraiture is definitely a passion for me and I love them for giving me the time to experiment.
what was in progress at the studio during open studio wednesday
In Art, local artist, Open Studio Wednesday on August 15, 2013 at 8:06 AMLast night was our first “Open Studio Wednesday”. My friend Jessica has been visiting from Maine for the past few days. She is a woman with many skills. Creative skills. I wish I could see the world through her eyes for a moment. We worked on a few projects while she was here, including print making and chicken coop wire sculpture forming. Jess and her daughter recently took a print making class using gelatin and they taught me the process last night. They also shaped me the beginnings of a new art piece that will be displayed in the front window of the studio. This morning we are going to work on dressing her up. You are welcome to join us next week. Open studio runs every Wednesday in August and September from 3-7PM.
Old Soul – One more photograph from my session with Elizabeth
In Children, local artist, Photography, Portrait on August 12, 2013 at 4:57 PMOne of the things that really struck me in my portrait session with Elizabeth was how at moments she reflected the parts of her that are still little girl, sometimes who she was in the moment – and now and then there were glimpses of who she will become. In this image she seems to be reflecting an old soul, even someone from the past. I found the moment very powerful. Do you see all of these things in yourself? We all carry with us part of the past, present and future. It was really cool to witness and capture it.

Experimenting with Encaustic and the Balance of running a Studio
In Encaustic, local artist, Photography on June 11, 2013 at 7:21 PMI’m quickly learning how delicate the balance of owning my own studio is. There is so much behind the scenes ‘business’ to take care of that since moving in I’ve done almost nothing creative – and this has been slowly depleting my energy. I’d read a blog post a few weeks back about a woman whose had a successful working studio for many years now. She wrote that in the beginning her experience was much like I seem to be having – the day to day tasks of keeping things in order leaving no time or energy for the reason she opened her shop in the first place. Then she made a decision to commit to her creative process as much as she was to the business part of things – and she dedicated three days a week only to her art. I love this idea and want to adopt it. Today I succeeded in getting in half a day of ‘just art’ – and it was great!
I’ve been wanting to learn about encaustic photography for a while now. I hope to be able to take a class from Corina Alvarezdelugo soon – check her out on FB here, she’s an expert in the field of encaustics. Until then – I tried to teach myself today.
I learned that it’s super easy to make a big mess with melted beeswax; that I really need to take a class; and that you can just peel out what you don’t like and start again.
Can’t wait to do a little more tomorrow. What new thing did you try today?
